DVM Training

Students Involved in Cases as Part of Their Training

Because this is a teaching hospital, veterinary students are closely involved in all aspects of diagnosis, treatment, and care. A fourth year veterinary student will probably examine your animal before, during, or after examination by a Hospital staff veterinarian. The student and Hospital veterinarian will confer about your animal's medical problem.

Complete Supervision

No diagnostic or therapeutic action will be initiated by a student without the Hospital veterinarian's direct consent and careful supervision. Treatment will be undertaken only after discussion with you, the client.

Allow Extra Time

Due to the extra time required for students to take histories, consult with staff veterinarians, and complete record processing, the length of your appointment will be longer than visiting a veterinarian in a private practice. However, there are no additional charges to you associated with the involvement of students in caring for your animal.

Resident Training

Specialized Training Opportunities

As part of its mission to provide specialized training opportunities, the School of Veterinary Medicine offers intensive training programs in the form of residencies and graduate studies leading to Board Certification in various specialties and the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Individuals that have demonstrated exceptional ability in the profession of veterinary medicine are selected for these programs.

At the University of Wisconsin, residencies are available in:

Matching Program Brings Residents to the School

The UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine participates in the national matching program to link qualified veterinarians with residency programs in their desired specialties. Based on qualifying scores, interested veterinarians are matched with a residency program at a participating institution or hospital across the nation. Individuals, once placed, generally spend three years concentrating on their chosen specialty, under the supervision of experts. At the end of that time, they take board certification examinations and if they pass, become board certified in the specialty.

The Role of Residents

Veterinary medicine residents provide some of the Hospital's services to the public and to referring veterinarians. All residents in the Hospital have graduated from a recognized college or school of veterinary medicine, hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM or equivalent credentials from a foreign university), and are licensed to practice independently in the state of Wisconsin.
