Wobbler Syndrome
Wobbler Syndrome or caudal cervical vertebral instability
is a disease that affects large dogs, most notably old Doberman Pinschers and
young Great Danes. Dogs with this disease have an abnormally formed spinal
column that causes spinal cord compression. Dobermans or Great Danes that
exhibit neck pain, have difficulty standing, or sway or “wobble” when walking
may have Wobbler Syndrome.
Surgery is the best treatment, especially in advanced
stages of the disease. A hormone treatment with corticosteroids (such as
prednisone) offers temporary relief of spinal cord swelling.
