Microscope for Intracranial Surgery

Dr. Filippo Adamo and his assistant,
Lisa Korth, CVT, use the surgical microscope during a brain neurosurgical
procedure.
By nature, brain surgery is delicate. A high-powered Nikon surgical microscope,
specifically designed for neurosurgery, allows surgeons at the Veterinary
Medical Teaching Hospital to conduct intracranial and spinal cord surgery with
high precision.
The microscope magnifies the surgeon’s view of the area being operated on,
allowing him/her to be more exact. An added benefit is a monitor that projects
an image of what the surgeon is working on. This allows students and residents
to intimately observe the entire procedure, gaining valuable knowledge in the
process.
Procedures performed include brain and spinal cord tumor removal, and
surgical biopsy of brain tissues to help diagnose specific neurological
diseases.
