Small Animal Surgery FAQ

Do students perform surgery? Yes. Students perform castrations, spays, declaws, and simple mass removals under the direct supervision of veterinarians. Students assist in more complicated surgeries.

Do you perform experimental surgery on clients' pets? Almost all procedures recommended and performed have been developed and perfected by surgeons at the University of Wisconsin and elsewhere. On rare occasions, an unusual case may require a new type of surgery. The faculty at the University of Wisconsin are well qualified to develop a rational plan of treatment and fully discuss the risks and prognosis for this treatment. Surgery is never performed on clients' pets simply to test a new procedure.

Will a clinician be available to answer my questions after my pet has been discharged? Faculty and resident surgeons are available for consultation by telephone after your pet has left the hospital. Because all faculty and residents have many duties in addition to clinical treatment of patients (teaching, research, administration, etc.), you may speak to a surgeon other than the one who treated your pet initially. We maintain extensive records and can contact each other for additional information to ensure that your pet continues to receive the best possible care after surgery.

Will anyone be caring for my pet overnight? Animals in the Critical Care Unit are constantly observed and monitored. Animals which require less intensive care are housed in the wards where they are checked frequently over night.

Can I visit my pet after surgery? The visitation policy varies with the animal's requirements for care. We encourage owners to visit when appropriate, and this should be discussed with the doctor in charge of your pet's care.
