Mast cell tumors are some of the most common skin tumors seen in dogs. Mast cell tumors can display a wide range of behavior, from being relatively benign and easily treated with conservative surgery, to being very malignant with a high potential for both local regrowth and spread.
Mast cell tumors are commonly treated with different combinations of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Determining the best treatment for a pet with mast cell tumor depends on the appearance of the tumor under the microscope, assessed by a biopsy, and the presence or absence of disease elsewhere in the body (staging).
