"Wisconsin oncologists are researching vaccines for the treatment of dogs with melanoma. The vaccine consists of cell from a canine melanoma cell line that has been established in the oncology research laboratory. These cells are irradiated so that they will not reproduce, and are then genetically modified to produce a protein that stimulates the immune system. This combination of cells and the protein they produce, when administered as an injection into the skin, has been shown to stimulate the immune system to specifically fight against the melanoma cells. We are currently evaluating the effects of this vaccine in dogs for the treatment of oral, digital, and cutaneous melanoma."
