Cardiac Catheterization uses dye injections, or angiography, to determine anatomic and functional abnormalities. Cardiac catheterization is used when performing balloon valvuloplasties.
Cardiac catheterization with balloon valvuloplasty procedure. Cardiologists
watch their progress on screen as they insert a thin catheter into a dog's
heart. Injections of radiographic contrast material (dye) into the catheter will
enable them to see where the valve is narrowed. They will then maneuver the tip
of the catheter to that spot and inflate a balloon to open up the valve orifice.
Balloon Valvuloplasty opens up narrowed heart valves so that blood can circulate freely again. During a valvuloplasty, an expandable instrument is surgically inserted into the narrowed valves and is expanded via a balloon-like tip when it reaches the problem area.
