When a cow is unable to get up due to injury or illness, she may stop trying. To coax a downer cow to her feet, the veterinary school has a special stainless steel tank into which the cow can be placed. Once the cow is inside, the tank is filled with water, which enables the cow to float to a standing position. Once on her feet, the cow will generally remain standing, enhancing her recovery chances.

A cow is placed in a sling to take
pressure off of the hindquarters that
have
muscle and nerve damage.
An inflated rubber bag can add
additional support to the sling.
