Myelogram (positive contrast placed around the spinal cord) in a dog with a "slipped" disc. There is less contrast around the spinal cord where the disc has herniated and is compressing the cord |
Routine radiographs are used to evaluate the bony structures of the spinal column. However, the spinal cord can not be seen on survey radiographs. Myelography (contrast medium placed around the spinal cord) is necessary for evaluation of the spinal cord and allows diagnosis of "slipped discs", spinal cord trauma, and spinal cord tumors. Although more expensive, MRI is often used to evaluate the spinal cord. Treatment has been successful in some patients diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor (myelography and surgery) using radiation therapy. |
