Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is also an example of cross sectional imaging, but it does not use radiation. The technique is based on the properties of hydrogen atoms when placed in magnetic and radio frequency fields. The primary use of MRI has been in the area of brain and spinal cord imaging. MRI provides improved anatomic detail of the brain and is more sensitive for lesion detection than CT images. However, CT provides better imaging of bone. |
